Outdoor dining in Sukhumvit: eating under the trees on Soi 20

Bangkok does rooftops and it does malls. What it rarely does is a garden: somewhere green, open to the sky and still five minutes from a BTS station. That is the gap The Deck fills on Sukhumvit Soi 20, and this guide covers how to make the most of it.

Why Soi 20 works for a long lunch

Soi 20 sits between Asok and Phrom Phong, a quiet side street with hotel gardens on either side. Walk five minutes from BTS Asok exit 6 and the traffic noise drops away. The Deck's terraces sit under mature trees, so there is real shade from late morning and a proper breeze by mid afternoon. If the weather turns, the air-conditioned bar and bistro are steps away.

When to come

The garden has three distinct moods. Breakfast from 7:30am is the quietest, all birdsong and coffee. From 4pm the light goes golden and the terraces fill. After dark the trees are lit and dinner runs until midnight.

Whenever you land, you are almost certainly inside happy hour: it runs 8am to 7pm every day, with beers at ฿99 and cocktails at ฿199. On Saturday and Sunday the weekend free flow from ฿699++ turns an afternoon in the garden into an event.

What to order outside

Long, shareable and cold-friendly is the rule. Start with small plates for the table, then work through the menu's comfort food and Thai favourites. Margaritas and mojitos hold up well in the heat; so does a properly poured Guinness at ฿230++, all day, if that is your speed.
